P.K. Kannan, a marketing professor at the University of Maryland Robert H. Smith School of Business makes the point that “search costs time. If someone is willing to give me personalized content and save me time, then I am willing to open my wallet.”
“You don’t want important stories to be overlooked in favor of the latest face cream,” adds Columbia Business School professor Rita Gunther McGrath, but “publishers do need to recognize what consumers want if they’re going to start making money again.”
“The End of Competitive Advantage,” McGrath’s recently published book is an interesting read for any person trying to navigate today’s challenges to business growth.
While it may not yet be time to pick a newspaper stock, there definitely are glimmers of hope for change and excitement on the horizon.
