25 Jul Design to dominate. How to arrange your desk
With the kiddos prepping for a new school year with fresh pencil cases and book bags, it’s the perfect time for those of us in the workforce to refresh our own work environment. Over the years I have read several articles pointing out different necessities for a positive productive work environment. I tend to create a cluttered mess by the end of the day so I try to keep the permanent features on my desk simple. Here are 4 things I couldn’t live without at the office:
- A potted plant
Not only do plants help clean your breathing air, but they also help bring that outside environment to your desk. According to a study done by Dr. Virginia Lohr of Washington State University plants decrease stress levels as well as increasing productivity by 12 percent. Any type of plant will do, so if you don’t have a green thumb a cactus may be a good start.
- My desk companion
I’m a big proponent of having a small, low maintenance pet to keep you company during the week. I personally keep a cute little beta fish at my desk (his name is WALLE), but a hermit crab or snail can also be a great companion to help with those stressful days creating those necessary breaks of happy distractions.
- Plenty of pictures
Surrounding yourself with people you love around you brings positive vibes and a reminder of why you work so hard. I prefer one maybe two photos in frames on my desk to not clutter too much but some people like to have dozens.
- Some sweet treats
Yep, having a sugar boost in reach is a positive pick me up. I usually let a coworker unknowingly take the role of the candy keeper so I don’t munch too much. This also creates an excuse to socialize for a few minutes with your coworkers every day, which is always a nice break to reboot.
I recently read this article, which outlines a pretty extensive list of office must-haves. Again, I like to keep it simple though, so outside of the basic pens, paper and tape supplies I like to have the following:
- Tissue packs
- Hand sanitizer
- A blanket (because our office is always cold!)
What do you think is necessary for a productive work environment? We want to hear from you!
