This week we have a special guest writer, Vicki Whiting, founder and President of Kid Scoop, an educational literacy tool for kids. Welcome Vicki 😃

 

Last week I met with the Marketing Director and Co-owner of a small grocery store chain in Northern California. I was there to ask them to sponsor my monthly magazine, Kid Scoop News.

 

To my surprise my contact knew what the phrase Newspaper in Education meant.  She said, “We love newspapers in the classroom!”

 

It turns out her business had sponsored NIE in The Sacramento Bee and Davis Enterprise in the past. She was dismayed when The Bee stopped sending print newspapers to the classrooms.  As a result she stopped her sponsorship.

 

She still wants to sponsor The Davis Enterprise NIE program. (They are a Kid Scoop Weekly publisher!), but they almost lost her sponsorship when a telemarketer called instead of the person at the newspaper she had worked with in previous years.

 

How come?

 

This sponsor believes in NIE. They want to support NIE and they want to enjoy their personal connection with the newspaper and schools. A ready and willing partner with money to spend.

Look around your community. Who is supporting kids and education? Who is looking to support meaningful educational projects?  These people want to know about NIE. These people would pay to support NIE. 

 

Bottom line?

 

You need to build a NIE program and then get out there and then ask folks to partner with you to promote literacy.

 

It can be done.
